this right here is a mix-video. i recorded it live, and present to the internet uncut in all it’s glory, to show you what i’ve been working on for the past year or so. i’ve also overlaid synced footage from a live feed of the mix process (don’t sweat the technique).

i started dj’n with music videos (vj’n?) after reading a wax poetics article where peanut butter wolf gave a brief rundown of his music video sets, and i thought to myself, i can do that shit yo! hour and hours of programming, bytes and bytes of youtube downloads and one ipad purchase later, i can in fact do that shit quite effectively.

the tracks are just some dance rap tunes with videos i like. apologies for double dipping on the diplo, but both those videos just fit right in. i’ve no idea if anyone will actually watch all the way through, so we’ll call it for archival and promotional purposes.

if anyone wishes to hear more about how i do this, send me a note and i’ll do a post with all the gory details.

the previous post calls for a little walk down memory lane with the funk-doc-spock. the first time i heard redman, i was in a van with a bunch of thugged out skater dudes on the way back from some hippy festival out in the woods, and coming down from all night acid trip. so yeah, enjoy.

whut the album - 1992 - flow is still fairly pedestrian, but there are hints of the brilliance to come in this video.

dare iz a darkside - 1994 - this is the album where he left earth, and the one that blew my drug-addled teenage mind.

muddy waters - 1996 - one of the best rap albums of all time. i would’ve posted “pick it up” but i can’t stomach the edited version. you just can’t properly sanitize “if you find a bitch passed out on the fuckin ground what the fuck you gonna do”

docs da name - 1998 - didn’t care for this when it came out, but it has grown on me. and this is video is reggie at his absurd best.

blackout - 1999 - red and mef, brothas from anotha motha. rocwilder beat, so sick.

in no way is the title of this post meant to denigrate said rap-dudes. rap is a young man’s game and i got nuthin but respect for the past luminaries continuing to put shit down.

classic redman shit is ahead of it’s time. a lot of this based/odd-future aesthetic that the kids are into these days, funk-doc pioneered 15 years ago. so it’s good to hear him on some 2010 sounding beats, even though his rhymes sound a bit dated.

do kweli and hi-tek constitute old rap dudes? i’m afraid yes.

since back in the day, when my rap knowledge was limited to the east-coast canon, hi-tek was always one of my favorite producers. he has such a unique sound, with subtleties and deftness on the sampler that a lot of new york based rap productions lack (perhaps owing to his natti roots?)

this track is hi-tek at his best; sonically sparse and rich at the same time. i enjoyed the last reflection eternal album and look forward to what they have in store. kweli really shouldn’t be rappin on anything but hi-tek beats.

goddamn i love me some dub-cee. dude just spits with authority you can’t deny. also seems to be single-handedly keeping the LA old-school on his back <sarcasm>at least until detox drops</sarcasm>

this new video is dope, however i am unsuccessfully trying to find this video i watched a few months back where he spits heat for like 5 minutes straight.

the raps-giving mix had the highest concentration of caucasian rappers i’ve ever mixed to tape. white southern rappers just happen to be killing shit these days. go figure.

the yelawolf train been gathering much steam this past year, since trunk music mixtape dropped. i believe he’s even signed to interscope, which greatly increases the chances that the full length is gonna brick (or be shelved). hoping for the best though.

jackie chain is keeping a somewhat lower profile, but i’m pretty sure he’s huge in the south. he’s less impressive than yela on a technical level, but i think he has more personality. rollin is a great track and i wish they’d finally make a proper video for it.

the last S.W.R. on the list i don’t know jack shit about. i guess he’s friends with yela, and sounds a little like him. whatever, this track has to be my favorite rap song in a minute.
